Ah, Kabi, great podcasting, terrific stories from cabbies. Sure I'm signed up for your new p'casts, but I've got some catching up to do on your blogpages. It occurs, you might enjoy the Jim Jarmusch's movie "Night On Earth" from 1991, a story of five taxis (their drivers and fares) in five different cities and time zones, all taking place at the same time.

Hi Miguel,
If only it had been I that did the transcripts my problem would be solved. But it was someone else who has stopped doing them. I could do them...but it would take me forever. I was looking for someone then didn't find anyone and then it sort of fell of my to-do list. Now I resolve I will try to get them back. I can see how it would be helpful.
Are you learning Hindi for studies? or because of someone? Must be harder to find people to practice with.
thanks for listening.
Best

A quick thumbs up from Holland! Good stuff, Kabi, keep it up!

This sure helps me work my Hindi. I loved the transcripts you did some time ago; they were really helpful. At least to show how colloquial Hindi is quite different from the more formal stuff in text books :-) and then some

Any chance of doing some more transcripts?

At any rate, can't wait for the next episode!!

I've just listened to three of your podcasts and loved them! The people, the stories and the depth of detail… My father drove a taxi in london and we always knew that, just like him, other drivers had a story too. But we didn’t know what a global narrative this was: family, money, seeing the city change, the fleeting notion of home, having an opinion about it all… You make these connections and the city come to life... Beautiful! Look forward to the next one...

thank you for the wonderful comment. I often wonder if there is too much ambient sound but its something I have little control over. Most of the time its too hot to ask the drivers to close their windows.

new podcast just uploaded and blog published. Hope you enjoy it.

thanks for your comments. I love the idea that you as an economist can arrive at some understandings of what is happening in this rapidly changing city and how the changes are enacted upon the people who toil and what they feel their place is in the imaginary, in both its discourse and its physical implementations. I had hoped that this would come through. I am interested in collecting these oral histories of now, in exploring the changes in bombay on working people standing at the margins, in migration and what we leave behind and what we gain, and to take a closer look at how these changes play out on one profession and the economic subgroups that surround and intersect it. I'm happy you are listening to their words.

any suggestions for new lines of inquiry, new questions would really be appreciated.

Really great work Kabi, sometimes feels like we are sitting with you in the taxis. The sounds of the outside traffic is captured perfectly, especially the horns. Really wish I was there. My residence is in the UK by the way. Please advice of next podcast. Look forward to it.

This is a wonderful story. And thank you Jamid Ali for spreading the word on Meter Down. He is a special person. And yes, anyone who meets him, tell him to go back to night school to finish his education. I keep telling him. Though after 12 hours in Bombay traffic, it will take a lot of effort. Glad you got to meet him Merwyn.

I rode with Jamid on August 20th, 2009 from Mahalaxmi Temple to Cooperage Rd. It was a most entertaining ride. He didn't know the way but, his stories made that irrelevant. He introduced me to meterdown.com, graced me with some Sher O Shayari dedicated to his mum and told me stories of UP and how he got to being in Mumbai. He is a very kind hearted and simple person and I wish him all the happiness and success in life.

PS: If anyone happens to meet him, remind him to go back to night school to finish his education.

Hi Cubby,

That is sad. The loss of livelihood is very real and tangible in city where there is so much of living paycheck to paycheck. In response to ASG (previous commenter), kiva has not started in India yet.

Hi Kabi,
Your blog opens a tunnel to people I always wanted to communicate with. Thank you for this incredibly creative effort. Perhaps some of your subjects might be interested in getting connected to lenders for financing their taxis? Have you considered www.kiva.org which connects entrepreneurs with microlenders?
Just a quick, off the top-of-my head thought.
